Frequently Asked Questions

WHAT IS A REGISTERED DIETITIAN?

Registered Dietitian, Professional Dietitian, and Dietitian are protected titles under provincial legislation. Only practitioners who possess the necessary educational qualifications and have met national standards are authorized to use these titles. This ensures that individuals seeking nutrition advice receive guidance from qualified professionals. Trust in the expertise of a Registered Dietitian for accurate and reliable nutrition information.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A REGISTERED DIETITIAN AND A NUTRITIONIST?

Dietitians are members of a provincially regulated profession that has Public Protection as their mandate. Dietitians are held accountable for their conduct and the care they provide. In Ontario, Dietitians are regulated by the College of Dietitians of Ontario.

Registered Dietitians (RDs) in Ontario are uniquely trained food and nutrition experts. They are the recognized experts in translating scientific, medical and nutrition information into practical individualized therapeutic diets, healthy meal plans for people, and building the capacity of individuals and communities to access nutrition for health and wellbeing.

The term “Nutritionist” is not protected by law in Ontario so people with different levels of training and knowledge can call themselves a "Nutritionist". The title "Nutritionist" is protected for dietitians in some provinces and dietitians do use the title "Nutritionists". To be sure you are working with a dietitian, look for the initials "RD" or French equivalent, “diététiste professionel(le)” and “Dt.P.” after their name.

WHY SHOULD I SEE A REGISTERED DIETITIAN?

Seeing a Registered Dietitian can be a great step towards improving your health and well being. They offer expert guidance whether you're looking to enhance your nutrition, manage a specific health condition, or seek support on your weight loss journey. A Registered Dietitian can help you create practical and realistic nutrition plans tailored to your needs, ensuring long-term success.

DO I NEED A REFERRAL TO SEE A REGISTERED DIETITIAN?

You do not need a referral from your doctor to see a Registered Dietitian. You can book an appointment on your own and start your journey towards a healthier you today!

ARE REGISTERED DIETITIANS SERVICES COVERED BY OHIP?

At this time, private Registered Dietitian services are not covered by OHIP. However, your extended health insurance benefits or EAP may provide full or partial coverage. Check with your insurance provider to see if you are covered.

In Ontario, Registered Dietitians are classified as an "Authorized Medical Practitioner." Even if your extended health insurance plan does not cover Registered Dietitian services, keep your receipt and provide it to your accountant to receive a non-refundable tax credit from the government.
